NOT SO OLD.

Although the historic Old City in downtown Knoxville might turn someone my age away with the word “old,” this area of the city is very popular with the twentysomething crowd.  I have just recently begun to make my way down there on a Saturday night and am excited to keep trying new places each time I go out with friends.

If you are looking for the best places to go out on the weekend in Knoxville, my first recommendation would be the Old City.  The mixture of old historic buildings with new shopping, restaurant and nightlife occupants makes this the prime spot for those looking for a good time.

Whether you are walking around shopping at one of the unique stores, sipping on a drink from the coffee shops or starting off your night out with a group of friends-the Old City cannot be beat for its ecclectic mix.

For the more laid back crowd who likes the bar setting more than the upbeat dance clubs, there are many options for you and your friends.  From Barley’s to Urban Bar to the Crown and Goose, these options are best for those who want to enjoy a tall drink and a good conversation with friends.  I love Urban Bar’s patio on a breezy spring evening and Barley’s for some good music.

Ready to go dancing?  The Old City offers a variety of places for you and your friends to let loose.  The new “Old City Entertainment Venue” offers an upscale feel along with the brand new NV nightclub and Carleo’s.  Don’t feel like having to deal with VIP sections or long lines?  I bet you would enjoy Southbound which is known for its great dance floor and second floor balconies overlooking the main street of the Old City.  Although much different than the streets of New Orleans, those balconies always remind me of a much tamer version of Bourbon Street!

Want to venture out from the Old City?  A few blocks down will get your group over to Sassy Ann’s.  This well known establishment in Knoxville has one of the most unique layouts in the city (it’s in a house) and the best Thursday night dancing.

The Old City is a great place to spend a few hours walking around during the day while shopping and grabbing a bite to eat…but my favorite time to see the scenery is at night when all the twentysomethings come out to mingle!

Next week I want to talk about an area that is starting to become a great place to hang out called “Happy Holler” here in Knoxville!

BACK.

I haven’t updated my blog in quite a while and I feel so out of the loop with it.  From starting my new job to getting ready to move, my life has been a little more hectic than usual.  However, I am excited to say that I have been brainstorming some new topics to write about.  Everyone knows I live in Knoxville and want to focus my efforts on writing about the city from the eyes of a twentysomething.  I will also sometimes throw in posts about public relations (my major) and things in general I see and like!

I am sorry for not posting in so long, however I am going to be back in the swing of things this week and will hopefully have many posts for you to read and enjoy!

Here are just a few of the many topics I plan to blog about:

1. Neighborhood Profile: Historic Old City

2. Neighborhood Profile: Market Square

3. Neighborhood Profile: Main blocks of Gay Street

4. Best Boutiques in Knoxville

5. Best Unique Shopping Finds in Knoxville

6. Best markets in Knoxville (at LEAST 4 new ones have opened this past year!)

7. Best pet friendly spots (Knoxville was just name the most pet friendly city in the Southeast, so I am excited to write about this topic)

Those are just a few to start, I have plenty more in mind!  Keep your eye out this week for my return to the twentysomething life!

LOCAL.

After working weekends for the past three years, I finally now have Saturdays and Sundays off-something that I am not used to! I had two days of free time and I thought, what could I do this weekend in Knoxville?  I remembered that one event that I had not been able to go to in quite a while was the Market Square Farmer’s Market.  Packed with local farmers and artisans, this is the best way for any young Knoxvillian to spend their Saturday morning.  Not only are you out and about not wasting away your Saturday morning sleeping, but you are seeing and learning more about the Knoxville community and local products in one place.

Around 9 in the morning on Saturday, I hopped out of bed and made my way downtown to peruse the tents filled with fruits and vegetables, flowers, meats, homemade food items, clothing, jewelry, artwork, sculptures, and other interesting items in the Market Square area.

I found two tents filled with jewelry by Sarah Brobst and ForYouByQ that I loved and ended up purchasing this unique necklace with an antique key attached.  I was ecstatic since this type of necklace had been something I have been searching for years, and the price was a steal at $15!

I saw large bundles of sunflowers for $5 and was excited to buy some to spruce up my flowerless apartment.  I also managed to get some locally grown vegetables for my first attempt at veggie stir fry.  Afer walking around for about an hour, I left with my hands full of great treats for a fantastic price—and knew I had just made some great purchases because they were supporting the local community.

Ever wake up on a Saturday morning and wonder what to do?  The Market Square Farmer’s Market is the event to check out to get some great products, see some wonderful Knoxville faces, and walk around one of the most unique and happening areas of the city.  Want to join me next time?

TRAVELIN GIRL

With things changing in my work schedule, I will now enjoy the ability to take weekend trips through out the year. For the past three years, I had worked weekends and am now excited to have an opportunity to have my Saturday and Sundays free to roam around Knoxville and take the occasional weekend getaway trip with friends or family members.  I have narrowed my options down to my top five weekend (or long weekend) getaways:

1. New York City - this is one city I have always wanted to visit and have never had the opportunity to travel to in the past few years.  I hope to take a friend with me for a four day weekend and enjoy the sights and sounds!

2. New Orleans - I love every aspect of New Orleans and have traveled down a few times in the past to visit friends.  I hope to travel down for a special event or just to stroll around the beautiful neighborhoods in the city.

3. Atlanta - I just went to Atlanta to pick up my little sister who was down there for a trip and my mother and I loved the shopping!  However, we only had three hours to walk around the whole city!  Hopefully next time I go I can schedule enough time to make stops at every place I want to see and shop.  My top places to stop in and buy things will be IKEA and H&M since Tennessee does not offer either options.

4. Charlotte, NC - One of my good friends from high school currently lives in Charlotte and I had an opportunity to visit her last summer.  I loved every part of Charlotte including the NoDa neighborhood.  I want to go visit her again soon and be able to revisit many of the places I enjoyed the last time I was there!

5. Chattanooga - This city would be the perfect place for my boyfriend and I to take an overnight sightseeing trip as our first “grown up” vacation.  From the aquarium to the Chattanooga Choo Choo to Lookout Mountain, this city is perfect for a small trip with low costs for a young couple to take!

These are just a few of the many places I would love to travel to over the next couple of years, if anyone would like to join let me know!  I am an awesome traveling companion!

WORKING GIRL.

I apologize for not updating this the past few weeks, I had been driving around Knoxville and surrounding areas interviewing for over ten jobs in the past two weeks.  Although it got hectic and at times seemed like the work was for nothing, I kept pressing on and finally was offered an amazing opportunity for a job in the Knoxville area!  All the months of searching have finally paid off and I am very excited to start my professional career with a leading corporation in the Knoxville area.

With a new job comes new choices, new responsibilities, and new contacts.  I have begun to make some big decisions in terms of my personal life (what bank to choose, buying more professional clothes, deciding what organizations I should join) however I wanted to take some time to think about what this new job meant for me on a professional level.  My three biggest realizations about getting a full time job are:

1.       Keep writing—This seems silly because most people will write on a daily basis at their jobs, but I think it is also very important to keep up personal writing on your own time.  Whether it be blogging, freelance writing work for a non-profit or small business that needs the volunteer help, or even writing in your own personal journal—these writing options will help keep you in check and help you stay simple and to the point when you have to write at work

2.       Keep up with your networking contacts—Yes you have a job and will be working with your co-workers everyday but don’t feel like you need to stop building and maintaining relationships outside of your office.  People at other businesses, fellow group members, and people in your community that have similar interests as you will be an important asset to helping you while you are working and in future projects.  Keep up with the random person you met at the Social Media Club meeting with a simple tweet saying hello or a quick FB post…even a nice email is worth the time and will keep that connection going strong!

3.       Don’t settle for doing basic work—Now you feel safe since you landed the job.  Do what they ask and you will be fine. No!  I think it is VERY important to not settle for doing basic work at your job.  Always be striving to do better than the bare minimum.  Showing that you are willing and ready to do more and put in that extra effort will impress your boss and hopefully lead to great things during your career.

As I start my professional journey, I look forward to learning new and exciting aspects of the industry while improving my public relations skills each and every day.

COOL OFF.

As the summer heat sizzles me every day while babysitting two young children, I thought about finding the best water places to beat the heat in the Knoxville area.  I was able to find some places that are great for you and your friends, kids you are babysitting, or just by yourself when you need some alone time.

1. World’s Fair Park Fountains

image

These fountains are a part of the 1982 World’s Fair Park located just west of downtown Knoxville. Along with the Sunsphere, candy factory, and museum of art-these fountains in the park serve as a good place to cool off when walking around downtown.

2. Splash Pad at Carl Cowan Park

image

This splash pad is located inside Carl Cowan Park located down Northsore Drive in the West Knoxville area.  This is the perfect place to bring the kids when you don’t want to deal with life jackets and being in a pool or lake all day.  The kids are free to roam around without the fear of them not being able to swim.  Even though I am 23 years old, I still get out there and splash around with the kids every time we go.

3. Cove at Concord Park

image

The Cove at Concord Park is perfect if you want a day at the beach without having to drive to the coast.  Along with the sandy beach along the lake, there are places to play and eat with family or friends.  Plenty of places to sit in the shade or get a tan!

Whether with friends or kids, Knoxville has plenty of places to relax, swim and splash around, and enjoy time with your favorite people!

In preparation for the summer season, I have begun researching products that I would like to invest in to get myself looking and feeling like a summer girl.  If you have used these products before, let me know what you think of them before I purchase them.  I always like to have someone else’s opinion of a product before trying it out myself.

LOCATION. LOCATION. LOCATION.

Ever wondered what areas to look at when searching for a place to live in the Knoxville area?  I had that same question as I left the University of Tennessee campus area last year to move into a place outside of the walls of “Vol” land.  Although I currently live right past downtown in a historic area known as Parkridge, I have always wondered what other areas I might like to live in if I ever decide to move.  Here are some of my top picks, hopefully they will help you on your search of the perfect home.

Sequoyah Hills area

This area is known for its big homes with families living side by side.  However, if you turn on the right back street you can find some great apartment complexes nestled in wooded areas.  Specifically, Cherokee Boulevard area provides the perfect area for those who love to walk or run, have a pet, or want to enjoy the scenic river view mixed in with large mansions.  The apartment complexes on the back roads are in a quiet area which is perfect for a young couple or a working professional.  I would love to move here someday and adopt a pet so I can go walking up and down the boulevard while people and house watching.

Old North Knoxville/Fourth and Gill area

Although these two areas are considered different, the way they easily combine together from one street to another makes me consider it one big area.  Right past downtown heading North, I feel like this part of town provides an ecclectic and diverse style that can’t be found in other parts of Knoxville.  From old victorian to bungalow style homes, this provides the perfect area for those who love the old time feel of a city with a young and fun atmosphere.  Many friends I have live in this area and enjoy the pricing of the older homes along with the convenience of being just a bike ride or a walk away from downtown and the night life of the historic Old City.  There are a few greenways to walk around on or just strolling up and down the sidewalks of these neighborhoods will show you a great view of the homes and people.

Downtown Knoxville

Downtown Knoxville is one of my favorite places to be and I hope to one day be able to live in the Market Square or North Gay Street area.  The great thing about downtown Knoxville is that there is always something going on without it being too overwhelming.  There are always people out and about but never to a point where a downtown resident would feel too crowded walking outside of their loft apartment or condo.  Within walking distance of great music, art galleries, stores, and some of the best food in the city—downtown is an area that you can’t beat if you are looking to be a part of it all.  When looking, specifically focus your search on Market Square and the historic Old City.  Although there are many other options downtown, these two sub-areas are my favorites.

Feeling Foxy

I have always considered myself to have a classic and sophisticated personal style, but recently I have fallen in love with a brand of clothing that mixes certain feminine elements that I love in clothing while also including aspects that have a bohemian and vintage feel that I would LOVE to try to wear if I could get up the guts.

Stone Cold Fox was started by two childhood friends, Cydney Morris and Dallas Wand who traveled the world together teamed up to make handmade clothing that are of top quality and the most unique yet beautiful outfits I have seen in a while.

I hope to invest in a few of their key items so I can expand my “safe” wardrobe to something more fun and different.  Hopefully once I start working full time I can put some money aside to invest in these quality outfits—the price is a little more than I can spend at this point in my budget but in the future I know Stone Cold Fox will be one of the main labels in my closet.

FOODIE.

There are a few places in Knoxville that I crave on a regular basis.  Nama Sushi is one of them and the other winner is the French Market Knoxville.  Sometimes I will be sitting at work and all of the sudden a craving for a Turkey, Spinach, Artichoke, and Cheese Crepe hits me.  I place my order and down Gay Street I go to retrieve my delicious meal.

Walking in, I notice the cute French made gifts and food items such as petite fours and macaroon cookies for purchase.  The owners are a husband and wife who are the nicest people you could meet.  The small space provides a cozy atmosphere while the outdoor patio gives you a great spot for people watching right on Gay Street.

If turkey crepes aren’t your favorite you can choose sweet crepes, baguette and croissant sandwiches, or soups and salads.  If you are in the mood for a taste of France in the heart of downtown Knoxville, the French Market provides the perfect food and feeling you are looking for.

FIT.

As I begin applying for jobs, I have found that looking your best is an important part of the initial meeting or interview process.  I always pride myself on trying to look classic and sophisticated so that people always get the right impression of me.

Recently, I have decided that my usual diet and exercise program have just not been cutting it in terms of how I want to look and feel when walking into an interview…or just in general!

I have always used Weight Watchers as my main diet plan, and although I have had amazing results and would recommend their program to anyone—I feel like my exercise plan has been lacking.  I enjoy the occasional zumba class-I sweat and get to dance (which I love) to some fun beats, but I want to try something that will really kick my butt.  Make me sweat or maybe even cry a little (just kidding-but no really…)

I have had some friends try the P90X program who have said it will literally kill you physically but was the best thing they did for exercise in their life.  I decided why not try it out.  So I am here today to announce that beginning this week-I will be starting the program to get my butt in gear for looking my best at job interviews and for the summer season in general!

Although I am not going to focus on my journey in this blog, I would like to randomly update you on my progress-good or bad.  I hope that this sort of exercise will be one that will change my view on working out to a point where I will continue to do it even after the initial 90 days.

So now you now my exercise plan for the summer and how I am going to stay on the right track!

JOB.

As a new PR professional, I have been doing different things to supplement my day to day online and newspaper job searching.  I feel as though the five things I have written are important for any new professional looking to start a career.  I hope these tips help you in your current job search:

1. Stay Informed

As a new professional, I am constantly trying to keep up with the information and new trends coming out every day.  Although you can google search most things, I decided that subscribing to certain newsletters and following certain blogs have helped me keep up most with the PR field.  Such resources as the PRSA website, PR News Daily, and certain blogs like NYCPrGirls have kept me updated on new and trending topics in the PR world.  As well as general information, I have an interest in music and fashion public relations.  I keep up with new music and fashion styles through different blogs as well as “following” certain leaders in those industries on twitter.  Reading up on Kelly Cutrone is one of my favorites—just because her attitude amazes me.

image

Kelly Cutrone, Fashion PR professional

2. Network, Network, Network

When first moving to Knoxville, I had no connections to any public relations professionals in the area.  However through my part-time jobs during college, attendance at major area events including the Social Slam Conference, and “following” or “connecting” with area leaders in my field, I have been able to create networking opportunities that have helped me obtain some great advice and find out about certain opportunities you can’t find posted on the web.  Most professionals are willing to take time and speak with you if you take the time to contact them without ever meeting them.  I connected with many well-known and respected professionals in my area and they have been an invaluable resource in my job search. So who cares if you have never met?  Just start following them on Twitter or message them on LinkedIn.  It can’t hurt to make that first step and who knows—it could bring some great opportunities your way!

3. Be social

Connecting via social media is the best thing to happen in a long time.  It can also come in handy when you want people to see your best work before you meet with them in person.  This has been important for me because all I have to do is give them my twitter name or LinkedIn account and they are connected to not only those sites, but this personal blog you are reading right now and my professional consulting service website.  Without using these social media sites, I may never have had the opportunity to showcase my work to people before going to a meeting.  Take advantage of all that is out there—be proud of your work!  All it can do is HELP because people are more willing to click a link to look at your stuff in their free time rather than wait to see it in person when they are in a rush.

4. Don’t forget to stay traditional

Although I am so thankful for what social media means to PR professionals, I like to stay traditional in certain aspects.  Anytime I go to an interview or meeting, I always take a hard copy of my resume, references, and business card just in case they want to see it in person.  Afterwards, I make sure to either make a personal phone call or send a quick thank you card  (such as the many cute options from Swoozies) through the mail.  I feel like many professionals appreciate this gesture and I feel more personable doing so.  The little classic touches keep me grounded in this digital world.

5. Stay positive

Even though I have not found a full time job yet, I continue to stay positive and keep working as hard as I can.  Whether I am volunteering, working part-time, or improving my skills on my own time—I know that everything I am doing will help me in the long run.  So even though you are on this continuous search, make sure to always stay upbeat in the public eye.  Nobody wants to see whiny tweets from a negative Nancy or annoying facebook statuses from a Debbie Downer.  Make sure your presence is positive, pertinent, and interesting.  So keep doing all that you can to meet new people, get your name out there, and improve your skills-because in the long run it will be worth all the wait!

WEEKEND.

This past week, I had the opportunity to go home to Nashville for a Lady Gaga concert.  While I usually stick to my bar hopping around The Gulch and Demonbreun Street, this trip I decided to take it easy and make my way over to the historic town of Franklin.  This quaint area is about twenty minutes down the road from my house (in West Nashville) and is the perfect picture of a relaxing atmosphere with the charm of sophisticated inhabitants.

image

*via

I started my day by stopping into the Factory of Franklin where I was excited to see the way that they had changed this 80 year old stove factory (and later bedding company) into a haven for local artists, unique shops, dinings, theatre, art classes, and offices.  The thing that grabbed my attention about the factory (other than its amazing setup) was the way artists had their own “nooks” along the hallways in which they worked on their crafts while displaying their finished projects right next door to full stores.  I ALMOST made my way into Happy Tails Humane Society in one of the corners of the factory, but I knew if I went in I would get too attached to any animals, and right now I do not have ample time to train.

image

*via

After my walk through the factory, I walked down a long street until I came upon the historic downtown Franklin.  I was amazed by the amount of people walking around but surprisingly the setting did not make me feel too overwhelmed.  Right in the middle of the circular loop around there was a film crew shooting what looked to be a commercial.  Who knew this quaint town would be the perfect setting for film and commercial shoots?  As I walked around, I passed by many appealing shops including this cute store that had a window display inviting customers to come for a “Royal Wedding” tea.  The display included royal wedding themed items, and it caught many people’s eye on the street.

As I walked through the many stores and restaurants that lined the streets, I came across a cute little place called Merridee’s Breadbasket where they make their food, breads, and pastries daily.  I couldn’t help myself and grabbed a delicious piece of freshly made key lime pie.

image

image

*via and *via

Connected to Merridee’s was a cute boutique where you could walk directly from your table into the clothing store.  Their dresses were unique, very chic, and affordable for a boutique.  I saw another opening on the other side of the store and when I walked in I realized I was in the famous Puckett’s Grocery Store.  This restaurant features some of the best food around and is well known for its music performances, such as “Rising Star.”

image

With a few bags in my hands and my stomach filled with key lime pie, I had enjoyed my day time stroll through this historic area—and found new spots to visit each time I go home that I had never been to the 18 years I had lived here before.

SWEET.

With my recent sweet cravings, I have decided to round up my top three picks for the best cupcake places in the Knoxville area that I am personally aware of.  With these three choices comes a variety of flavors and looks to treat anyone’s sweet tooth.

1. The Cup (formerly the Cupcakery)

image

image

image

With their District of Bearden location, this cupcake store is the epitome of deliciousness.  Such flavors include Lemon Drop, Summer Crush, Pumpkin Harvest, Graceland, Minty O’Malley, Double Decker, and Sugar Cookie to name a few.  You can stop in for a sweet treat or order a bunch for a special event.  The great thing about the Cup is that oen day a month they have a portion of their sales donated to the Butterfly Fund here in Knoxville.  Tasty treats for a good cause!

2. Cities Cupcakes

image

image

image

With flavors such as Knoxville, Paris, Chicago, Cincinnati, Washington D.C., Orlando, Richmond, Charleston, New York, and New Orleans…you know it is going to be a good bite!  Also located in West Knoxville, this cupcake boutique is a hit with locals.  Different cupcakes with different flavors and styles are present—such as the Cincinnati which is a mix of caramel, pecan, and coconut icing on top of a german chocolate cake.  Yum!

3. Magpies

image

image

image

Located in North Knoxville, this might possibly be the best cupcake place in Knoxville (according to me.)  Along with cupcakes, Magpie’s specializes in celebration and wedding cakes.  These tasty treats come in a variety of flavors including marble, peanut butter, vanilla mocha, lemon raspberry, and many more.

Have you got a sweet tooth now too?

SING.

As summer approaches, there seems to be an abundance of music festivals and shows happening near the Knoxville area.  Through my internship with a local radio station, I am given a glimpse into certain events that are taking place soon.

Since I am currently working part time, I have decided to take this summer to job search, but also enjoy a few of the events I will mention here.  If you love music, or want to try something new—some of these festivals and events will be a great opportunity to check out within the coming months!

Beale Street Music Festival —Memphis, TN

image

Just six hours away from Knoxville, the Beale Street Music Festival will sure to be a highlight in Tennessee’s music scene this summer.  Acts including Flaming Lips, MGMT, Slightly Stoopid, John Mellencamp, Cee Lo Green, Mumford and Sons, Ludacris, the Avett Brothers, and so many more!  This 3 day event will be located on a riverfront park located at the foot of Beale Street on the Mississippi River.  Weekend passes start at $90.

Jamz Island Music Festival —Charleston, SC

image

A little bit longer down the road is Jamz Island Music and Arts Festival in Charleston, SC.  This festival will feature homegrown beats of funk and electronic music by artists such as edIT, Zoogma, Greenhouse Lounge, and more.  An interesting part of this festival is the live painting and art displays while Brick House Kitchen serves food to attendees. Weekend passes start at $70.

Amberland —La Fayette, GA

image

Although this focuses on one main band (Perpetual Groove)—I had to feature it because P. Groove is one of my top favorites!  This festival is a tradition of Perpetual Groove and features other acts including Zoogma, The Mantras, Former Champions, and more.  Six sets will be played by P. Groove through out the course of the festival.  Weekend passes start at $95.

Camp Reggae —Turtletown, TN

For those Knoxvillians who don’t have the time to travel too far—Camp Reggae is just the festival!  This event features the Natti Love Joys, Mystic Dub, I.R.E. and more.  Weekend passes start at $40.

Those are just a VERY small portion of the opportunities to see some great music this summer! For those willing to travel for longer amounts of time, festivals including Camp Bisco, Electric Forest, and Wakarusa.  Of course, there is Bonnaroo nearby-but everyone already knows about that.

On a smaller scale, Knoxville is hosting its first annual Meadow Lark Festival in June to be hosted by WDVX radio station and Ijams Nature Center.  More information to follow for this one day festival to take place at Ijams.

There are some of my ideas for music near Knoxville for you and your friends to enjoy this summer festival season!

VOLUNTEER.

Recently, I have become more interested in volunteering.  The spare time I have had while job searching had left me with extra hours through out the week that I thought I should put to good use.

Only being in Knoxville for five years has made it hard for me to find everything I need in the city—volunteer opportunities being one of them.  However, being proactive was the only way for me to figure out what types of opportunities fit me best.

Recently, two have stuck out in my head that I am willing to try (and one I already have!)  I strongly recommend taking the time to volunteer whether it be a way to add to your resume or just to meet new people while showing support for your community and those around the world in need.

With my most of my friends graduated and gone, I feel as though volunteering will not only give me a sense of accomplishment in helping others but an opportunity to meet new friends and network with people in the area.  Public Relations is not all publicity for entertainment and big corporations…many non-profits use communication specialists to get their message out to the community.  I hope to use my PR skills in any way I can to help the groups I am wanting to volunteer with.

There are so many options in the area and by google searching, finding groups on facebook, or searching volunteer databases-I am sure you will have luck like I have in finding the right fit for you.

My Three Groups: (two to try and one already done)

Haiti Outreach Program Knoxville—this program has been one that I have been interning with for the past few months; I enjoy every moment I am able to help this amazing group in their efforts to support the people of Haiti.  Through fundraising events such as a formal dress fashion show and sale, medical benefit, and PGA golf tour ticket sale fundraisers along with education sponsorship drives and trips to Haiti, this group puts forth an immense amount of time and energy.  This group is great because there are people of all ages involved ranging from grandparents to college students.  They are always looking for volunteers and can be reached at helpnow@givehaitihope.org

Habitat for Humanity-Women Build—I have not had a chance yet to participate in the Knoxville Habitat for Humanity however I attended the Women’s Today Expo last month and found my way to their booth.  Women, dressed in black and pink, with tools?  I was a little intimidated but I signed up for their e-newsletter and just recently got an e-mail with some upcoming opportunities.  I am very excited to try my hand at building a house and helping with other events they host to raise money.  I know right now they are putting on their gently worn designer clothes boutique sale at the Farragut Building on Gay Street (downtown) to raise money and will have many other opportunities throughout the year.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of East TN—Just recently have I heard much about this organization with the recent spots on WBIR Channel 10.  Erin Donovan, a reporter for the station, had become a big sister to one of the children in the program.  Without this introduction on the news program, I probably would have never learned more about the opportunity and would have not continued my research of what exactly the BBSETN does.  There are many ways to help: donating, becoming a mentor for a child, being a part of the community program, or going to a child’s school for an hour a week.  I am going to keep researching this opportunity and hopefully will be able to assist in some way in the near future!

WEATHERED.

The weather outside is frightful…so I am staying home curled up in bed reading my new book from the social media conference I attended this week, drinking a Jones Zilch Black Cherry Soda, and listening to my new favorite song on repeat.

With this month bringing showers to the Knoxville area, I have decided to start researching some purchases I will be making soon and decided to share my findings with you.

Where: 103 W. Jackson Avenue 37902

Why: Best place I have gotten a haircut in Knoxville during the five years I have lived here…plus the girls were so nice and helpful….and they have stuff for sale from local artists, including hair accessories, clothes, and products.

Special Tip: Students—schedule an appointment for Thursdays (30% discount with student ID)

Building located on the corner of W. Jackson and Central Avenue in the heart of the historic Old City Knoxville

Some of the stylists from Lox Salon—these ladies have great individual style!  However, I am more conservative and they still managed to make me look stylish yet classic!  The interior of this salon is fantastic, with old wood and a big open space so people don’t feel cramped next to other clients. The historic Old City area where the salon is located is known for their very old buildings, and this place does not disappoint.  Even if you don’t need a haircut, stop in for some shopping and looking around at the artwork that adorns the walls.

FACE.

As a twentysomething always wanting to look her best, I try to keep my makeup soft and subtle with a hint of glamour.  As a recent college graduate, I decided it was time to up my usual no-makeup to class look with a sophisticated look I could wear to work each day then easily change to night time if I needed to be somewhere in a rush.

Knowing nothing about what makeup looked good or not on myself, I ventured over to Sephora (most girl’s usual makeup spot here) in the West Town Mall in Knoxville.  A really funny woman with the craziest red hair and brightest blue eyeshadow came over to help me.  She decided she would give me a “makeup re-vamp” and although I was terrified she was going to make me look like Lady Gaga…she actually gave me a classic look that made me feel confident but also gave me that boost into the “Hey I have a classic look—but I feel so much more glamorous!”

Let’s just say I am starting my more sophisticated and professional life with a look to match—but I know how to amp up my face for a night out on the town with friends and colleagues.

Break.

Who: Twentysomethings

What: Spring Break 2011

When: March

Where: Miami, Florida

Why: Need a break from all the chaos in Knoxville!

After a long past few months after graduating college, I decided to treat myself to a spring break trip which has not happened since high school.  I could have gone to Destin or Panama City Beach like the rest of Knoxville-however I decided to hit up Miami, Florida and have some fun by myself somewhere that I would not have to see people I knew around every corner.

One good thing about Miami for me is that I have relatives who live in the area.  However, even a twentysomethingish guy or girl with doesn’t know anyone can have a great trip!  Here are a few of the higlights of my trip and hopefully next time you are planning to go down to Miami, you will remember a few of the things I pointed out.

DAY 1: South Beach

What to do:

Arrive in Miami!

image

image

Eat dinner at Puerta Sagua on the main strip of South Beach

image

image

Shop at ZARA, MANGO, AND DASH MIAMI

image

Stop by the Chesterfield Bar & Lounge or if you like a wilder scene-Fat Tuesday’s!

DAY 2: South Beach

What to do:

image

Lay out on the beach

image

Rent a jet ski if you feel so inclined

Play volleyball along the beach

image

Eat a sushi lunch in South Beach

Grab a drink at one of the many bars or restaurants along Ocean Drive that runs parallel with the beach

Drive over to Sunset Place outdoor mall and check out their three story building that hosts a mix of different shops and restaurants

Eat dinner at your second cuban restaurant stop of the trip!

DAY 3: Biscayne Bay

What to do:

Go to this family beach just ten minutes down the road from South Beach if you are not feeling the party crowd today and would rather rest and relax alone

image

Catch a starfish

Lay out…again.

image

image

Drive over to Little Havana to see a bit of history from Cuba’s past and how the Cubans in Miami enjoy themselves in this area today

Don’t eat cuban again today…take a break…maybe some yogurt…and nothing else.

Have a random local (in my case-my relatives) show you around the city by car (I stopped by Florida International University, the Biltmore Hotel, Miracle Mile, and many beautiful residential areas)

DAY 4: South Beach/Coral Gables/Coconut Grove

What to do:

Lay out one more time before you have to leave so it looks as though you have been relaxing and tanning the whole trip!

Drive through Coral Gables and Coconut Grove areas to see some cute houses and shopping in a more bohemian area of town

Pack up—it’s time to head home!

My tips to save time, money, and headaches:

  1. Take the bus or the train line—I drove and almost wrecked about a million times!  Unless you are used to large city traffic-do not attempt this!  Also, parking in South Beach costs about $20 for the day, so you might save money by just getting a bus or train pass AND not have to worry about drinking and driving!
  2. Eat at hole in the wall cuban restaurants— You save alot of money and usually it is better than the nicer places!  For 3 people, a meal at a cuban place cost $40 including tip; at a sushi spot in South Beach our meal cost $70…not good for a twentysomething on a budget!
  3. Bring your own drinks— if you plan on having more than one margarita or daquiri….BUT don’t bring glass bottles to the beach…although it’s cheaper than those fancy drinks-you will get fined by the police if you have glass bottles on the beach area!  So bring a mixed drink in a coffee cup and avoid the hassle!

Grind.

Who: Twentysomething

What: Very tired—needing a wake up

When: Morning after a long night out in the Old City

Where: Just walked out of an apartment downtown, can’t find car

Why: No 20something can get through the day without a cup of joe

What to suffice morning funk: Downtown Knoxville Coffee Shops

Remedy Coffee—Try the Peppermint Mocha Latte (W. Jackson Avenue)

  • Music venue

Old City Java—Try the Blueberry Almond Bar (Old City area)

  • Relax and check your computer

The Parlor—Try the coffee-it’s local! (Corner of Gay Street and Summitt Hill)

  • WDVX radio station inside the same building; daily live music

image

Downtown Grind—Try their cleaning services (Gay Street)

  • Prestige Cleaners inside the coffee shop

Cafe 4—Try one of their cute miniature cupcakes (Market Square)

  • Music Venue for bigger name acts

Coffee and Chocolate—Try anything-this is my favorite place downtown- the atmosphere is calm and the building is tiny but I love it (Market Street)

  • Painting in the bathroom makes me smile

BLISS.

image

Who: BLISS

What: Diverse and eclectic mixture of clothing, jewelry, gifts, and home furnishings

Where: 24 Market Square

Why: Because honestly, there’s nothing else as whimsical and cute in the Knoxville area.  Every time I go in I try to convince myself to buy one of their overly cute aprons, however I end up walking out empty handed with the realization that I do not need an apron since I do not have a kitchen.

DRINK.

Who: Knoxville Hipsters

What: Dinner and Drinks at THE PUBLIC HOUSE

Where: 212 W Magnolia Avenue

Why: Thirsty.  Personally, I did not care much for the crowd—however the layout and design of the Public House is one of my favorites in Knoxville.  The one large piece of artwork behind the bar was just enough, and the large open floor area with bar seating along all the walls and a few couches made me feel as though I was up north.  Maybe I will just have to make appearances during the day when the hipsters aren’t making their rounds late at night.

DANCE.

As a very busy girl who works random jobs at even more random hours, I find it hard to find the time to fit in exercise if I am dreading the monotony of the treadmill and weight machines.  I had heard about this new type of exercise that was becoming very popular because of the fun, dance like exercise that doesn’t feel like you are exercising.  I also heard that one hour of it could burn nearly 10,000 calories.  I was curious, so I looked into ZUMBA.

ZUMBA is great for me because I used to dance in high school and so even though I am out of college now, I can have my 45 minute dance time 3 days a week.  I really enjoy the dance moves because they mix certain hispanic dances with hip hop moves while playing latin music!

I went to ZUMBA at the Cansler Family YMCA just off of Hall of Fame Drive.  The night time class has an instructor named Hope, a younger girl who is FULL of energy and really gets you excited to be there and helps you learn the moves.  The great thing is even people who think they won’t catch on or will be horrible can learn, because the class does the same 45 minute routine for a certain amount of time (enough to get it down and perfect it) but then changes it up after a few months so that there is something new and fresh to keep the class not bored.

I would highly recommend taking this class, not only for the amount of workout you are getting in, but for the fun time you will have.  I hadn’t danced since high school, so after the first time going to ZUMBA I was hooked and so excited to continue doing it to improve my dancing ability and get a great workout in to during my hectic and somewhat boring work days.

In Knoxville, the Cansler Family YMCA and the West Side YMCA offer Zumba classes, so if you have time go check out a class-you will not regret it.
